Officers respond to situation on 3rd Street

Maryville Public Safety Officers responded to a situation on Third Street yesterday morning. Public Safety Director Keith Wood says a man with mental issues had locked himself in his home.

"When we went to check his well-being, he barricaded himself inside the house.  I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was armed but he had access to weapons in the house.  He did not want to be visiting with us nor did he want to seek mental health on his own.  It took us about an hour or so to visit with him and to communicate with him through a window to suggest that maybe there was a better place for him to go.  And he was eventually taken into custody and transported to MOSAIC for a mental evaluation."

Wood says prior training received by Maryville Public Safety officers was valuable in responding to yesterday's situation.

"We try to make sure that all the officers are trained in critical incident responses and to be able to identify what tools to use and at what times.  It's a complex world sometimes.  But in this particular case, we were able to get the individual hopefully the help that was needed."
